IP address conflict

Postby obietrice » Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:42 am

Good afternoon,

Thank you in advance for any advice and help. I have a wireless router connected to main computer in home. I use my laptop to connect to internet through the wireless router. Last night I noticed an error on the main computer stating "ip address conflict" because the two computers have the same IP address. I just did an IP look up and the two computers indeed have the same IP address. However there have been no problems in browsing the internet at the same time. Is there a real issue with the two computers having the same IP address?

one probably got dis-connected and on re-connect its ip was re-assigned.
run cmd and type 2 things here:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

That should straighten things out.

The two computers would have the same Internet IP - the one you see when you go to this site. This is normal as the wireless router is given this IP. The IP's that would be conflicting would be the IP addresses of your computers which each should have different IP addresses on your local network. If you go to command.exe and type ipconfig the local IP is shown. My guess is the internet still works because the computer automatically gets a new local IP address?
