Sounds like a "privacy" feature that replaces the user's IP address with a token or something not working correctly.

What platform are you using?

Can you provide a screenshot (or a copy/paste) of the complete error message?

If you are using a wired internet connection turning the modem/router off for 8 hours usually results in a new IP address being assigned.

It's possible that the mail server was "clicking on links" to see if they are malicious.
