Reporting Fraud with an IP

I have been defrauded out of some money by an imposter who was pretending to be a famous actor. I saved his emails and I know his IP address. If I send it to the police and ask them to trace the computer do you think they will? I live in Massachusetts and the imposter lives in Kentucky.
