play in degrading the effectiveness in terms of hiding one's real IP address of a VPN or SSH tunnel that originates from a box inside the network, behind the router, and passes all of its traffic through it?

or does it even matter?

I have a general understanding how they both work but never thought about the router in the loop.

Let me think outloud for a second:

Start up the VPN.
All the traffic going out is now encrypted.
It passes out the router and to my VPN service gateway.
It's decrypted and the request passed to the server.
The server sends back it's response to the VPN access point.
The response is in encrypted and then sent back to my through my wifi.
Response is then decrypted on my computer.

Ok, forget it, I think I just answered my own question. ;)

You've got the basic point but your forgetting that there are different types of vpn's out there and they operate at different levels of encryption.
