Can IP address be captured by link in tweet, FB Post, etc.

Post by misty1508 » Tue May 01, 2012 5:42 pm

I'm wondering if it's possible to capture someone's IP address by having them click a link. For example, if someone was being a troll on twitter, would it be possible to tweet back a link that would track their ip address if they clicked.

For the sake of this post, let's say they clicked the link. Thank you

@misty1508
Nothing is misty at all. Sure, if you want to capture an IP of your sleuthed visitor you just insert a simple code within your link then when a sleuth comes you get his IP immediately :mrgreen:
Where you can get such simple code? For instance here:

http://www.analysespider.com/ip2country ... dress.html
http://www.coderanch.com/t/532888/JSP/j ... ess-behind
...
want more? :ugeek:

While code could be added to a link to provide detection, the best option may be to send the person a link to a web site where you can access the SERVER LOGS. I do this all the time. But you need some kind of web site where you can have something for them to go to and try to open like a web page, photo, or anything else that is a "file".

It's easy. You just send them the link to the thing you want them to look at or download. Then later when they have a chance to do that, you either look at the server log file, or in the "Recent Visitors" in cPanel. Look for the file you told them about and see who accessed it from what IP and what the time and date was. Easy!

Voodoo: Thanks for the links to IP detect code - I found something useful for detecting proxy usage. :-)

I know of a site called linktrack that when a target clicks on the link it appears with their IP address.

Be careful about what links you click on even if its from a friend on facebook. Well about as much of a friend as you can have.

One of the sole reasons I refuse to have a facebook account is because attackers know its a database with like what? 6million active users 99% of which are fake accounts lol.
