I am currently going through a VPN. It's even one your site recommends (PureVPN). I set it up about a month ago. Thought everything was OK till I went to your web site. Just wanted to see if I can be located. Your site pin pointed my real location. Not the one in the Virgin Islands that my VPN is set up for. I noticed you used IPv6 which uses a different type of IP I'm not used to seeing. Don't know if that means anything or not. Anyway can you explain how you are able to locate my real location and what I need to do to make sure the VPN address is found instead? Most of the other sites use the IPv4 IP. if I do a search with them, they find the VPN site not my real one. My concern is if you can find my real location, so can anyone else. What good is the VPN?
Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

There are a couple of possibilities:
1) You have W3C location sharing enabled in your browser and you provided us your actual location.
2) Not all VPN providers properly reroute IPv6 traffic. Many recommend disabling IPv6 on your computer or router.

Thanks Chrispcritters for the reply. I was able to turn off IPv6 in my router and that took care of the issue. However it seemed to slow everything way down. Any site I go to takes a lot longer to load. Is there anything I can do about that? One other thing, what does WJC stand for in your first suggestion? Thanks again.

World Wide Web Consortium. It's a web standards body. There is a standard for location sharing from a browser to a website. In most browsers if you search for "location sharing" in the preference that's what you are looking for.
You didn't clarify if disabling IPv6 resulted in slow internet while using a VPN or while not using a VPN. If your VPN speed appeared to get slow that makes sense. When IPv6 was enabled your traffic to IPv6 enabled sites didn't go through the VPN (often the slowest link in the chain).
IPv6, in general, can be faster than IPv4 -- not because the protocol itself makes things faster -- but that the IPv6 route to a website might be faster than the IPv4 route to the website due to less traffic on the route. One of the side effects of dual stack (IPv4 and IPv6 enabled) is that the fastest route is supposed to be used.

After I disabled IPv6 my VPN was active. So what you say makes sense. Thank you very much for your help.
